Beyond the Wadi: Plastic in Daily Life
It is easy to blame tourists at wadis for leaving rubbish behind, but the truth is that plastic begins its journey long before it reaches a cliff or a pool. Most of it starts in places that feel completely normal: the supermarket, the coffee shop, the school canteen, and even our own kitchens.
Single-Use by Default
In many shops, plastic is still the default. You buy one item and automatically receive a plastic bag. At cafés, cold drinks come in plastic cups with plastic lids and straws, even if you are staying for just ten minutes. At school, snacks are wrapped in layers of packaging that are used for seconds and then thrown away.
The Hidden Cost of Convenience
Convenience has a hidden cost. The plastic that carries your sandwich today may end up in a landfill, burned in an open fire, or blown into a wadi during the next storm. When plastic is burned, it releases toxic gases. When it escapes into nature, it threatens animals and spoils beautiful landscapes.
Small Changes, Real Impact
- Bring a reusable bag when you shop, and politely refuse plastic bags you do not need.
- Use a refillable bottle instead of buying new plastic water bottles every time.
- Choose snacks with less packaging or share larger packs with friends or family.
- Ask your school canteen to offer more eco-friendly options.
From Individual Actions to Community Culture
One student using a reusable bottle does not solve the plastic crisis, but it sends a message. When many people make similar choices, shops and companies start to notice. Step by step, the culture of “take, use, throw” can change into “choose, reuse, respect”.
The battle against plastic does not only happen in dramatic locations like Wadi Shab. It happens quietly in each decision we make, from the checkout counter to the classroom.
